In fact, it’s safe to say that books are a central part of every culture, and the United States has more books than any other country in the world.
Most people rarely see people of colour in history books. It’s well-known that history is written by the victors; true to this effect, most people learn about the history of the United States in a textbook that is written by white authors, with white characters and covers the history of the United States from a white perspective. This can be seen as an effect of American imperialism, the effects of which are still being felt today. Books are a wonderful way to introduce students to the history of people of colour.
Celebrating The Event Itself
What makes June 19th so special to our community and how can we celebrate it in the right way? It’s the day that slavery was officially abolished in the United States in 1865.
